Editors used to say a good reporter’s best tool was a phone book and a pair of decent shoes. That line wouldn’t make sense to anyone starting out today. Now the job starts on a feed \u2014 that’s where leads turn up, where a story either takes off or dies quietly, where a reporter’s name means something or nothing at all. X, LinkedIn, Facebook<\/a> \u2014 none of them was built for journalism, but they ended up running a good chunk of it anyway. Some of what changed is genuinely good. A lot of it just made the job harder in ways nobody saw coming.<\/span><\/p>\n

The Shift Hasn’t Been Easy<\/b><\/h2>\n

Nobody handed newsrooms a manual for this. Platforms rewired how stories get found, who pays for them, and whether anyone trusts what’s printed at the end of it all.<\/span><\/p>\n

  • \u00a0 \u00a0 <\/span>Speed keeps beating out accuracy, even when it shouldn’t.<\/b> Everyone wants to be first. That instinct runs straight into the slower work good reporting actually requires \u2014 checking a source twice, sitting on a story until it’s confirmed. Getting there first feels good for about five minutes. Getting it right lasts longer.<\/span><\/li>\n

    Social media didn’t just change where stories get posted. It changed how they get built, who gets to build them, and what it costs the people doing that work day after day. Some newsrooms adjusted well. Plenty are still trying to catch up to a shift that happened years ago.<\/span><\/p>\n
